Radon in the Workplace

In the UK, radon in the workplace is a concern. The radioactive gas is a hazard not only in homes but workplaces too. Breathing in radon gas is fatal as the radioactive gas causes lung cancer. However, radon testing and surveys are simple and relatively easy to measure.

According to the Health and Safety At Work Act 1974, employers must ensure the health and safety of employees. They should also ensure the safety of others who have access to the workplace. Under the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017, employers must keep exposure to ionising radiations very low.

Radon in the Workplace

Public Health England has carried out radon surveys and testing in more than 600,000 workplaces. Using the radon measurements from the surveys and tests, Public Health England produced a radon potential map of the UK. The map shows locations with elevated radon potential.

Employers can consult the map on the UKradon website to know if their workplace is in the affected area. All types of workplaces can have high radon levels. They include:

  • Offices
  • Schools
  • Warehouses
  • Hotels
  • Nursing homes
  • Residential care homes
  • Health Centres

Even underground workplaces such as mines and utility service ducts may have significant radon levels. The levels of radon depend on several factors such as:

  • Ventilation systems
  • Location
  • Occupational patterns
  • Type of structure and others

To know the exact levels of radon in the workplace, employers need to carry out a radon risk assessment. This includes radon testing and survey. Our experts at the Radon Consultants can conduct radon testing at your workplace. From the test results, we can advise you on the best mitigation systems to reduce radon levels.

How to Test for Radon at the Workplace

At Radon Consultants, our radon experts will carry out the initial testing using a radon testing kit. Depending on the size and occupation patterns, our radon experts will recommend the number of detectors required. Next, we will send the detectors to a specialist radon testing laboratory for analysis.

Then, we will send you the radon test results after analysis. If radon levels are above the recommended UK guideline, our experts will recommend the best mitigation systems. These systems will reduce radon levels in your workplace. There are two ways of mitigating radon levels:

  • Positive pressure ventilation system
  • Radon sump

Besides the installation of these systems, our radon experts will track and monitor radon levels at your workplace. We use digital radon monitors to provide continuous monitoring. After mitigation works, our radon experts will carry out repeat radon surveys and testing at least once every two years. They will also carry out maintenance of the mitigation systems to ensure they function efficiently.

Hire Our Experienced Radon Specialists

Every building has radon, and while some have low levels, others have higher levels. Those with higher levels should be tested for radon. Our radon specialists can conduct radon tests to show annual average radon levels.

If they are below 300 Bq per cubic meter of air, the only action is to carry out a risk assessment. However, if radon levels are above 300 Bq per cubic meter of air, employers must take steps to reduce the radon levels.
